Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M422 fixed-mount VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including a large backlit LCD display with a four-step contrast, an intuitive, easy-to-use keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a hot fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching.

The radio--which mounts conveniently on your boat's dash using the included bracket kit--employs Icom's Force5Audio technology to boost the sound pressure levels and produce crisp, loud reception. The integrated microphone, meanwhile, is finely tuned to pick up voices while minimizing ambient background noise, such as a boat engine, wind, or seagulls. DSC activates an instantaneous, continuous "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your position, and time stamps the message. But that's not all, as boaters can also use DSC to make contact with a specific boater of group of boaters in your area. DSC uses a unique ID (MMSI code) that's similar to a telephone number. To stay in contact with specific boaters, simply store each boater's unique address in your radio (the IC-M422 holds up to 100, each with a five-character name).

Another nice detail is the IC-M422's GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS receiver, the radio can send your GPS position to other boats, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen in seconds, provided the navigational device accepts the NMEA data format. The polling function also checks whether a specific ship is in your communication range.

Finally, the IC-M422 can double as a public address (PA) system for onboard announcements or ship-to-shore communication using an external loud speaker or hailer. The RX speaker function even lets you monitor the received audio from the loudspeaker or hailer while you sit on the deck or tower. Keep on top of emergencies while staying in touch with other boaters with the Standard Horizon STD-HX370SAS "intrinsically safe" handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for commercial marine use, the HX370SAS is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio offers a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And if that weren't enough, it's also compatible with up to 40 commercial Land Mobile Radio (LMR) channels with CTCSS or DCS signaling, though a Standard Horizon dealer will need to program the channels (and users are responsible for obtaining the appropriate FCC license).

As with any well-built marine radio, the HX370SAS is rugged and fully waterproof, with a compact design that can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function, either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels 16 and 9 and the NOAA weather alert, which warns you of inclement conditions. Other operational details include a Preset key that easily recalls your eight most-used channels, an oversized LCD with channel names, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.

The HX370SAS is also certified as "intrinsically safe," which means the radio itself and such accessories as the FNB-V57IS ni-cad battery pack, the CMP460 speaker microphone, and the FVP-31 voice scrambler meet the requirements of ANSI/UL913 6th edition for use in intrinsically safe environments, and are also built to withstand the day-in, day-out punishment of hostile commercial environments. The latter group includes: Class 1: flammable gases, vapors, or liquids; Div. 1 Group A (acetylene), Group B (hydrogen), Group C (ethylene), Group D (propane); Class 2: combustible dusts; Div. 1 Group E (metals), Group F (coal), Group G (grain); and Class 3: ignitable fibers and flyings.

When you're not using the 5-watt radio, simply drop it in the included charging cradle, which will keep the rechargeable ni-cad battery operating at full capacity. Also included is an AC charger and a quick-draw belt clip. And because dead batteries can be a serious safety hazard on the water, the HX370SAS sports a battery life indicator on the LCD that warns you when the battery needs charging. Also compatible with optional speaker microphones, headsets, and voice scramblers, the HX370SAS radio measures 2.3 by 3.7 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
