Icom IC-M422 Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radio (Black)

Icom IC-M422 Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radio (Black) Review

Icom IC-M422 Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radio (Black) Feature

  • Fixed-mount marine VHF radio preprogrammed with all U.S., Canadian, and international channels
  • Receives all 10 NOAA weather channels with weather alert function; instant access to channels 16 and 9
  • Priority scan, Dual Watch, and Tri-Watch modes; Digital Selective Calling transmits automatic distress signal
  • NMEA-format GPS compatibility; doubles as public address system for onboard announcements
  • Submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes; measures 6.47 x 3.06 x 5.47 inches (W x H x D); 3-year warranty

Icom IC-M422 Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radio (Black) Overview

Black 25 watt VHF with hailer, built-in DSC that meets RTCM SC-101, individual, group and all ships call, position request and position report with a third party GPS receiver, submersible construction, including microphone

Icom IC-M422 Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radio (Black) Specifications

Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M422 fixed-mount VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including a large backlit LCD display with a four-step contrast, an intuitive, easy-to-use keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a hot fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching.

The radio--which mounts conveniently on your boat's dash using the included bracket kit--employs Icom's Force5Audio technology to boost the sound pressure levels and produce crisp, loud reception. The integrated microphone, meanwhile, is finely tuned to pick up voices while minimizing ambient background noise, such as a boat engine, wind, or seagulls. As a result, both casual conversations and urgent distress calls come through loud and clear.

The IC-M422 offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on emergency channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch" modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged.

And as with the best fixed-mount VHF radios, the IC-M422 comes with built-in Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which lets you send a formatted distress message in an emergency. DSC activates an instantaneous, continuous "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your position, and time stamps the message. But that's not all, as boaters can also use DSC to make contact with a specific boater of group of boaters in your area. DSC uses a unique ID (MMSI code) that's similar to a telephone number. To stay in contact with specific boaters, simply store each boater's unique address in your radio (the IC-M422 holds up to 100, each with a five-character name).

Another nice detail is the IC-M422's GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS receiver, the radio can send your GPS position to other boats, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen in seconds, provided the navigational device accepts the NMEA data format. The polling function also checks whether a specific ship is in your communication range.

Finally, the IC-M422 can double as a public address (PA) system for onboard announcements or ship-to-shore communication using an external loud speaker or hailer. The RX speaker function even lets you monitor the received audio from the loudspeaker or hailer while you sit on the deck or tower. Additional details include seven-step keypad backlighting, instant access to channels 16 and 9, and a low-voltage indicator for when the battery is running down. Housed in an attractive black case, the radio measures 6.47 by 3.06 by 5.47 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.

Standard Horizon Matrix STD-GX3000SB Waterproof VHF Marine Radio (Black)

Standard Horizon Matrix STD-GX3000SB Waterproof VHF Marine Radio (Black) Review

Standard Horizon Matrix STD-GX3000SB Waterproof VHF Marine Radio (Black) Feature

  • Fixed-mount marine VHF radio programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international channels
  • Supports all NOAA weather channels; high-quality microphone with noise-reducing technology
  • Compatible with optional RAM+ remote microphone; Digital Selective Calling sends immediate distress signal
  • Transmits GPS location when connected to receiver; Dual Watch and Priority Scan modes
  • Submersible black chassis; measures 7.1 x 4.3 x 4.5 inches (W x H x D); 3-year warranty

Standard Horizon Matrix STD-GX3000SB Waterproof VHF Marine Radio (Black) Overview

Black fixed mount VHF submersible marine transceiver with commercial grade ITU class D DSC VHF, 30 watt loud hailer with listen back and 4 for horns, bells and whistles, large 56mm internal speaker produces loud audio, oversized alphanumeric LCD display, DSC distress call automatically broadcast lat/lon and vessel ID (when attached to GPS), lat/lon, SOG and COG displayed, oversized rotary channel selector, channel name capability, display repeats GPS information (when attached to GPS), user programmable scan, priority scan and dual watch, fully adjustable backlighting and LCD contrast, one-button access to channel 16/9, dual station capability, voice scrambler (optional).

Standard Horizon Matrix STD-GX3000SB Waterproof VHF Marine Radio (Black) Specifications

Stay safe while navigating the coastal waters with the Standard Horizon GX3000SB Matrix fixed-mount VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the Matrix is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio picks up 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And because it's nearly impossible to monitor the NOAA channels at all times, the radio includes an audible weather alert tone and visual alarm. The variety of channels and functions make this an essential tool for communicating with other boaters, marinas, the Coast Guard, and commercial towing companies, all of whom can offer live-saving assistance during a crisis.

The Matrix comes with a high-quality microphone that meets the same strict waterproof standards as the radio. More significantly, the microphone incorporates Standard Horizon's ClearVoice noise reduction technology, which eliminates unwanted background noises such as engines and wind. The resulting "loud and clear" transmissions are crisp and easy to understand the first go round, adding to the safety of all involved. At the same time, users can create a second VHF station through the same antenna by connecting a separately sold Remote Access Microphone (RAM+) or a VH-310 telephone-style handset. The advanced submersible microphone, which works at such locations as the fly bridge, cockpit, or tower, controls all the radio functions from a distance while also showing the channel names and repeating the GPS information. The RAM+ microphone even comes with 25 feet of routing cable, so you don't need to run additional wires for an external speaker.

The Matrix also meets the internationally recognized requirements for Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows you to send a distress signal at the touch of a button or exchange position information with other boats or stations. DSC activates a continuous, unattended "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your latitude and longitude, and gives the time. Furthering the Matrix's safety reputation is its GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS position receiver, the Matrix can send your GPS position to other boats in an emergency, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen. The GPS function is a great time-saver in a crisis--the Speed Over Ground and Course Over Ground info will keep you closely on track--but is also a good way to track down friends or locate a hot fishing spot.

Finally, the Matrix is a breeze to use thanks to the large, backlit LCD display, which offers tall, wide digits and obvious, easy-to-identify information flags. Other details include a variety of channel scanning functions, including Dual Watch (monitors one user-selected channel at the same time as emergency channel 16) and Priority Scan (scans any combination of channels along with a priority channel); an optional PA horn that creates a fully functional loud hailer complete with four fog signals, bells, whistles, horns, and sirens; one-button access to emergency channels 16 and 9; and a large 2.25-inch internal loudspeaker that easily trumps the sound of a boat engine.

Bundled in a submersible black case, the radio keeps on talking even after a full drenching. The radio, which measures 7.1 by 4.3 by 4.5 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a three-year warranty.

What's in the Box
Matrix fixed-mount radio, microphone, mounting bracket with hardware, power cord, dust cover, quick-reference card, user's manual.
